View your brakes and clutch components as resources. The more you use 'em, the faster they go, and the brakes are cheaper to replace. The rest is about preferences in driving style.

So how about the opposite issue? I sometimes on acceleration, I'll wind it out in 2nd or 3rd, either for fun or just to get moving quickly in traffic. But then might skip from 2 to 4, or 3 to 5 because I'm going to be cruising near that speed. If synchros are a delicate resource, doesn't this make sense (presuming I'm not lugging the engine)?
