When I see a light or come up to a stop sign, I throw it in neutral, let out the clutch and use the brakes. Of course, I start pressing on the brakes early so I don't have to press hard and use them up sooner. Letting the clutch out eases the pressure on the system, reduces wear on throwout, and yes, brakes are much easier and cheaper than a tranny. Also is best to let clutch out when you are waiting on a long light or stalled in traffic.
