I always assumed that it would be better to have the front wheels "locked" in case of the (extremely unlikely) event that the car is not parked on a level surface and the hand-brake fails.
Since reverse has the lowest gearing of all the gears, it would provide the most secure and immediate resistace to any movement from an external force.
Of course, it also makes the car harder to tow away.
It's really just a matter of habit, although I can't see any compelling reason to break it, so I probably never will!
