Clutch pedal return spring question

My '93 CSE has been sitting for a month with what I thought was a serious clutch problem - the pedal goes to the floor but does not return unless I physically pull it up... it sticks to the floor pretty strong, but once I get it about an inch up, it "pops" right back to normal.
I pulled off the lower dash covering today and examined more closely, and found that the return (compression) spring was covered in gunk and appeared to be out of its proper place. The problem is, I can't figure out that proper place. The top of course is connected to a pin on the pedal mechanism with a retaining clip, but I am unsure where the bottom should go. There is a bit of a groove in the bottom of the clutch bracket where it rests against the firewall, but placing the end there doesn't work.
I spent an hour today with my head under the dash moving the clutch pedal up and down, looking for some location where where depressing the pedal would always cause the spring to compress through its full range, but can't find anywhere - I find spots where the spring would compress half way, but then lengthen out again, causing the same problem behavior I have had.
The Haynes manual is no good and the parts diagrams I have don't show the other end of the spring connecting to anything. Does anyone have the full service manuals out there, and can anyone tell me where this darn spring is supposed to connect?
Thanks in advance for your help.
