I just read thru your thread, and there's not much more I can add. The whining, though, could be coming from something else other than the axle. I am not familiar with how the inner driver is installed into the tranny case, but the cv joint end must be firmly installed into the hub bearing so that the c-clip is seated within its groove. I had a bear of a time trying to get the cv end all the way into the hub to allow the clip to be in its correct position. Could this be a similar situation in your case, only that it would be on the inside of the joint (and not the outside, aka cv joint)? Could the axle not be fully inserted at either end?
To think more about it, I do not think the axle would emit a whining noise. It would be more of a clicking or clacking, since the axle does not spin *within* itself, but rather, spins as a complete unit. The flexibility of it, due to the joints on either end, allows the axle to move up and down, left and right, while still spinning the wheels. A whining noise would more than likely come from a worn bearing or something internal to the tranny.
