As Ari says, do both while you're in there -- really not much to it. I believe that 99% of the time it is indeed the front oil seal that leaks (often prodigious quantities). Don't worry about overheating the car, as it should only take 10-15 seconds at most to run out of gas. You stand a good chance of yanking the front oil seal off with the crankshaft pulley, by the way.
Be sure to prime the oil pump by cramming vaseline into the oil pump before reinstallation. Make sure it's nice, clean vaseline so that no flecks of stuff can cause the oil pump to seize. If you don't prime the pump, it's possible that it will not deliver oil to the engine at startup.
Also, make sure your oil pressure switch is functioning properly. It controls the idiot light inside the little car diagram in your instrument panel (the one that shows when doors are open, etc.). In the engine compartment of this diagram, you should see a happily glowing little red oilcan symbol when you turn on battery power. After a few cranks, the light should extinguish, and indication that it's registering oil pressure. It's not uncommon for the switch to fail, in which case the light never lights up.
