I sold my '93 Aero to a friend a while back, and upon hearing it wasn't running well, I agreed to have a look.

As we chatted and I looked over the engine bay for loose vacuum lines and etc, he told me he had the oil and air filter changed recently at Jiffy Lube, so he didn't think the air filter should be a problem. About then I noticed that the connection on the inlet side of the turbo was disconnected and just passively sitting next to the turbo because the other hoses and etc were holding it there. I figured it must have popped loose while the Jiffy Lube guys replaced the filter!

Aha! With great hubris I declared the problem solved. I re-attached the fresh air pipe and asked him to start the car, ready to declare victory.

He started the car and (get this) it blew the thing right back off! (Mind you this is the low-pressure/inlet side of the turbo). I tried again several times and the car blew the inlet pipe off every time. Stranger still, If I pushed the pipe on and held it there, and the car would die.

Stumped? Me too.

I took it for a spin around the block (with inlet pipe dangling, sucking air straight into the turbo) to see how well it ran this way. Amazingly, it did 'ok', (smooth, but only base boost).

To keep this long story from getting too much longer...after lots of head scratching and general poking around (tested BOV, vac connections and etc), I decided to check the freshly installed filter to see if somehow the inlet pipe had been blocked.

I opened the air box up to see the solid rubber end of the filter smashed up against the inlet pipe. YUP! They put it in backwards! Un-freaking-real.

I can't get over how the car ran at all in this condition (sucking air directly into the turbo through the tiny gap between the inlet tube and the turbo)

Anyway, sorry so long, but I thought y'all might enjoy the story. Besides, who doesn't love a $0 fix (especially w/ a 93 TCS Aero lol)?

Cheers
