Well I finally got it replaced, did it myself and it was tricky (as is all Saab work) and so far, it has not died. But I haven't been stuck in 15 minute traffic nor has it been as hot as it was when it died. But I'm pretty sure that oughta do it.
Quick write-up on how to change the CPS on a 93 CSE:
Jack 'er up, remove right front wheel and front inner fender liner.
As far as using a homemade tool to maintain tension on the serpentine belt, a carefully placed C-clamp works as well.
Loosen crankshaft pulley bolt before slacking the belt. Take off the belt and remove crankshaft pulley. DO NOT use a screwdriver to hold pulley stationary while trying to remove bolt - I used an air socket wrench and it came right out without rotating the crank.
Remove upper slotted alternator bolt, and angle alternator towards firewall. You'll be glad you did this, if you haven't removed the alternator entirely of course which makes the next step easy. THE lower bolt strips easily (allen head) and is not necessary to loosen unless you wanna yank the alternator, which is not a bad idea.
Remove old CPS from its mounting behind crank pulley and remove the wiring from the loops behind the idler pulleys. You'll see there's pretty much only one way the wires can be routed due to the hard plastic sheathing. BTW the connector is a bear to loosen one handed.
DO NOT thread the cps thru the tight spaces, screw it to the mount and route the wires instead. You moved the alternator, right?
Connect the new CPS to the existing harness under the intake by hiring a smurf to do it for you. A munchkin will suffice in a pinch. But jeez is it ever hard to if the alternator is still in, and impossible damn near if you didn't push it back towards the firewall. Try till you get it right. Zip tie the wires to something solid.
Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Don't forget the smurf.
