I've done it on two cars. It is more work, and yes, you do need to be careful with the hole at the bottom of the strut, as well as with the cut on the top of the strut. I bought a set of used struts off ebay for $15 & cut them apart to make the Konis & powder coated them yellow to match the rear shocks.
That said, I still spent about 1/3 the time on the fronts as the rears on both of my cars. It's a real PITA to get the lower rear shock bolts apart. I ended up having to use a 3" cutting wheel on them, which took quite a while.
