Hi all,
So I'm on the highway today doing about 100km/hr steady with the windows open and soon feel a constant tapping being transmitted to the shift knob. Rolled the windows up and turned down the radio and hear a loud tapping (almost knocking noise) which is clearly coming from the front under the hood. The engine seems fine although I could feel through the accelerator the transmission feeling a little rougher as it drove the wheels. So I pulled off to the nearest parking lot to try and assess:
1. The tapping is constant with car speed, not engine speed. The engine seems fine, so I think its the drivetrain that's the source here.
2. I couldn't duplicate the sound in reverse gear.
3. With the car off, I let it roll backward in neutral and did feel the tapping noise...felt and sounds like the Wheel of Fortune (except for the absence of Vanna, who would've been a welcome surprise given my frustration).
4. After a bit of driving, the noise went away, although through the car, it feels like a slight mechanical rubbing of somesort has replaced the frequency of the noise I heard. I figure it might be the transmission, possible even something like a tooth on the clutch pressure plate getting locked into something...but I'm totally speculating here.

I did a search on the board but couldn't find a post which helped.
Some help would be appreciated - I've got a long drive back home tonight and want to try and put my mind at some ease that I'll make it home ok.

Thx
