idler pulleys an many new cars are pretty standard sealed bearings. Over time heat and moisture attack the grease, inevitably causing bearing failure. Heck these are the samer style bearings that are on high end bicylce hubs (albeit larger), and they need to be replaced yearly if use excessively 10K or more a year.
