OK, so you pass on the Saab, and buy a Toyota or Honda. I'll bet you're not buying new, but something with 120Km on the clock, or the equivalent. Hondas and Toyotas are reliable, but once you hit high mileage on ANY car, it'll need work. There are no reliable, old, high-mileage cars. Don't fool yourself there.
Yes, Saabs take fixing and maintenance. So do other cars. You're no mechanic. When I was in school, neither was I. I learned by working on cars, because I didn't have the money to have anyone else fix them. And even today, if I run into a major issue, (say, a new engine), I'll turn to a pro, because it's not worth my time.
For ANY car, I'd take it to a local shop that works on that sort of thing, and have them check it out. It'll be the best $75 you spend. You're not looking for everything to be perfect, but just to catch the things that'll kill you soon - like worn suspension, oil in the coolant, a leaking head gasket.
IF this 9000 checks out good, then go for it. It's safe and comfy, and will hold all your worldly goods. But yes, it's 14 years old. If you're comparing it against a '01 Honda Civic, the Honda will probably cost you less to keep running. But if you're comparing it against any other $1750 (Can) car, I'll bet you're looking at a '93 Civic with 137Km. Not only is that car due for something big, you'll be driving a clapped out Civic that'll crumple like a paper bag in a crash, and won't hold much.
