I just picked up a 95 9000CSE turbo 5spd w/209k miles on it.Looks amazing and seemed well-cared for.The big issue right now is this-the first couple of times I drove it,it would only get boost for a very short time at the high end of the rev range..in other words there was no midrange but a big spike. The turbo seemed very noisy as well, but I attributed some of that to there being no rear muffler.Well, soon I was getting NO boost and a lot of whistle or whining, like the turbo was spooling but nothing was happening.Had a Saab tech check it over and noticed the wastgate was sticking. It didn't help, though, and still wouldn't move.I drove for a few days with no boost..and eventually the turbo noises also went away...
So,finally, today I am driving up a hill in third gear and the car starts bucking and stumbling.I let off immediately and everthing was ok,but as soon as I tried to give it more than half-throttle it would do it again, and there was some minor black smoke out the exhaust, but only the very first time.
I got home, shut the car off,and went back about an hour later and started it....big plume of white smoke but was running fine.I took it down the street a ways and soon after it did the smokescreen trick again and almost stalled.
So...does this sound more like the turbo gave out,or a headgasket? The car started fine and didn't smoke again later, but I don't want to drive it until I'm sure. There are no leaks or anything and the oil level and condition are fine. The fact that the turbo was making all sorts of noise and now nothing leans me that way,but...?
