Lifter noise will be a ticking noise as you've already mentioned whereas a loose timing chain will make a rattling noise. I'm not sure if '92's have the upgraded timing chain tensioner, but if it doesn't then it could certainly be the cause of timing chain noise. That said, from what you've described I would say it is lifter noise. This may go away by changing the oil to a slightly heavier grade.
