I've towed a max of probably 1500lb with my 9000s (F500 race car, open trailer, tires, tools etc). Even with no trailer brakes, stopping was a non-issue (actually better than some smaller GM "tow vehicles" stop when empty). The car is still on the original clutch at 204k, after 12 years of various kinds of abuse (city driving, autocross, rallycross, towing F500s & karts all over Oh/IN/PA). Very easy to get wheelspin in 1-3rd, especially in the wet.
I think the shape of the trailer may be the killer- our Town & Country lists a max sq. footage of the trailer' s frontal area, and everyone I know with an enclosed trailer cites wind drag rather than weight as the prime gas mileage killer. Along with declining gas mileage I assume goes increased drivetrain load.
Another problem might be balance- the 9k doesn't seem to like more than about 110lb of tongue wt, which could be too little for the trailer.
My dad still tows his F500 with a CSE, which has like 230k on it now. No towing-related failures in 4 seasons. I think that car has a Da'Lan or something like that on it. My '92 has the Saab OEM $$$ hitch, which looks much better FWIW. There's a connector under the left taillight to plug in to for lighting, but you'll need an adapter box to convert to 4pin connector.
How about a Volvo wagon with a V8 conversion? A bit more room in back, no weight transfer off the drive wheels, and it's still Swedish. I think the wagons are rated for 3000-3500lb, same as the T&C.
(Also, in a completely unrelated story, since you're Cessna Pilot: I solo'ed this morning- nothing fell off the plane & I walked away :-) )
