I've had the exact same thing in my 1990 9000 2.3i! I agree, it does sound like a far-off siren when starting off from a dead stop. Just a little bit of a "wooooooooo!" from about 1500RPM until second gear. I've changed my fluid twice in the past year, and it's squeaky clean... Also, no sign of debris or wear anywhere in the transmission... it just whines. However, I've noticed more of a whine since last october, when my transmission cooler line sprang a leak. The noise hasn't gotten any worse, and the tranny shifts just fine. Who knows? I'm prepared to just live with it. At least I know the tranny's working, right?
