Andy,
Well here's the problem...
Symptom of a connector blown off: loss of boost, sometimes a hissing noise when accelerator is pressed.
Symptom of a connector failed (split open): loss of boost, sometimes a hissing noise when accelerator is pressed.
Symptom of failed intercooler: loss of boost, sometimes a hissing noise when accelerator is pressed.
;^)
Usually the only way to tell is mechanical inspection. The problem is, some of the connectors are pretty hard to see - an inspection light and mirror can be very helpful. A blown-off connector should be pretty obvious if you can get a view of it. If a connector splits open, this can be very hard to see when the vehicle is sitting, as the split can close when not under pressure. Sometimes the only way to tell is actually remove the connectors and inspect their insides.
I had exactly the same symptoms in my car about 2 months ago. Ended up disassembling & inspecting pretty much everything, didn't find anything until I got to the hardest part - yup, a blown intercooler. The crimps holding the plastic tanks on had failed, opening a gap of about 1/4 inch on one side, a bit less on the other. Enough to pretty much kill all boost. I fixed it by crimping everything back together then epoxying it - we'll see if it holds!
