or hacking the hell outta the stock airbox to allow more incoming air:
This will allow any water to enter the intake system, be it from a deep puddle, hard rain, over-heating situation (coolant being sprayed all over the engine bay), etc.
Granted, these are not every day conditions, but once is all it will take to wreak havoc.
Many people, I included, use the drop-in K&N air filter style that utilizes the stock airbox in its natural state. It lasts 50K miles before needing cleaning and re-oiling (very easy to do), and allows more air in, supposedly faster than a stock filter. Plus, it's cold air vs. the warmer stuff being sucked in from the engine bay by using an open-cone style.
Do any of these upgraded air delivery systems increase hp? Mentally, yes; truthfully, exremely minimal, if any. There have been write-ups on this topic proving false advertising, but then there have been studies showing a slight increase in hp, around 1 to 2 at the most. However, this only comes into play with a turbo (or some other sort of forced-air system) engine, not with a normally-aspirated one (which probably will not gain anything extra).
