estate car (station wagon). Here in the UK, it used to be that if you bought a kit of parts to build a car, you escaped the Purchase Tax. The kit I bought took me and a friend a weekend to build. The whole interior was fitted already, ditto instrument panel etc. but you had to fit the big bits like engine, suspension etc. Worryingly, we had a whole box of bits left over but everything seemed to work OK...
Gilbern started with a car based on MG components and even the later ones used mainstream components (like MGB brake discs and the big Ford V6, which was also used in the Reliant Scimitar and other stuff like Tridents, I think) so parts weren't a problem. Size was similar to the contemporary Alfa GTV, with more muscle and a certain amount of refinement.
