Head Gasket job / removal of counterbalance shaft

Hello all!
On my 97 9K CSE, my mechanic at Capitol Mechanics (Troy NY) discovered motor oil in my coolant - and strongly felt after eliminating other possibilities that it was a head gasket problem. They have sent the head to the machine shop for a magnaflux.
The mechanics (Marc Sigond, and Mike Levin) are suggesting that I should strongly consider the removal of the counter balance shaft, and the chain the goes with it - and doing so would revert back to the 2.0L design which they feel would eliminate any potential hassles with this chain down the road. How much merit is there to this suggestion, and what would be the risk that I am taking by doing so.
Thanks for your input!
Ravi
