overcurrent protectors. They are made of conductive polymer and PTC=Positive Temperature Coefficient (resistance goes up with temp., actually very non-linearly). Otherwise, I concur with Steve C's explanation of Adrian's symptoms. The situation would be aggravated or may be caused by mechanical drag or a dirty motor drawing excessive current. I found a wide selection of PTC resettable fuses in an Allied Electronics catalog, but the chip types are much smaller than those in the wiper module. They are very cheap (<$1). A leaded version may work, but I need to know the maximum working motor current under load..does anyone know?
I found a motor that looks identical at Radio Shack, but the shaft comes out the wrong end. meanwhile, the latest motor that i tried to clean now seems OK, but the contacts to the square PTC chip are marginal; it can be made to work by wiggling.
