one other thing. The parts counter guy who sold me the NGK plugs last month told me that they were pre-gapped at the factory, that that was why they had the little cardboard tubes around them, and that I didn't have to worry about gapping them myself. I sort of vaguely checked while installing them, but didn't pay a lot of attention to it. They did seem pretty close to specs in the Haynes Manual. But if they were out a bit, could this have such a huge effect on mpg? Again, the car runs like a top, perfect in every sense except for mileage.

I'll reset as suggested and get back to you. Thanks for the tip.
