My wife's 93 cse 2.3t has the same problem for well over a year. I've had it checked by the dealer and my indie with no solution. I suppose if I had an unlimited supply of money eventually the dealer could find something. But with their diagnostic computers, a defective part could or should be found in short order.
Plugs were changed (ngk) and the old ones didn't reveal any problems with combustion- Air filter was changed -- thermostat changed. In the interim, the di cassette was changed and the timing chain replaced. THe engine sounds and runs fine and the performance is the same. There is no fuel smell anywhere. I was worried about it passing the emissions test but it passed with flying colours.
I've been told that driving habits, temperature changes, tires etc. etc. make a difference. This I believe. But when the difference in fuel economy is so large for such and extended period, I don't believe it can be one of those things.
Please post a solution if you find one.
