a 92 9000S is probably beyond the age when paying a mechanic to address the chains is worthwhile. You'll almost pay for the entire car that way.
Even so, if your chains are truly bad, they're not going to quiet down much or at all when the car warms up. What you're probably describing is either valve lifter noise (clak-clak-clak-clak) or a serpentine belt tensioner on its way out (rattle-rattle-rattle-rattle). Lifter noise generally goes away when the car warms up; the tensioner rattle will happen all the time.
In the case of lifter noise, live with it like so many Saab owners do, and drive happily for about a zillion miles. The tensioner pulley is a cheap part and you can even replace it yourself if you've got the tools, time and inclination.
If you're the lucky winner of a soon-to-disintegrate Saab engine, it's a time bomb of unknown duration. Lots of them last and last, or you might be walking home tomorrow. Either way, with the valuation on these (or other) Saabs apparently on a par with their original depreciation schedules, you can buy a later model without the timing chain worries for a pittance, and then go about worrying over oil sludge instead!
Just curious: how many miles on your beast?
