Robert,
I was also dismayed by the 'lakka glovebox' illness - so I began
checking and working on the 'fix' - I vehemently dislike SRS/PRS
in any form ('attack seatbelts' really anger me !!), and here is
what I have found out and done:
1st - got a matching glovebox from a similar 9K at the boneyard.
2nd - Found out the SRS can be ripped out by the roots, this way:
a - replace right side 'bag' with glovebox
b - disconnect, or ignore steering wheel 'bag'
c - remove SRS ECU under center console, right side - it is orange.
For lack of wanting to remove the main guts - if a person wanted
to defuse these in-car explosive devices without a permanent idiot
light to remind them, a resistor can be put in place of the little
rocket engine to keep the SRS light out.
An older steering wheel appeals also....
And before anyone flames me about removing SRS - I have been seeing
for years how even in new cars these things explode randomly, and
in actual accidents, injure folks badly and even kill some folks.
50 years of living without needing this 'protection' has me firmly
convinced that since I drive with my eyes open, in one of the safest
cars made, I can go a while longer without being so 'protected'.
(And I don't give a hoot what the statistics, or the ins. companies
have to say....)(And my '88 wasn't made with any !)
Best Wishes,
mark
