Metallic snapping valve area, misses when accelerating

Hi All,
I could use some good advice. Have a 9ks with 197k miles. Had for 5 years and no problems in the engine till now. One week ago engine started constant loud metallic snapping or clacking definately under valve covers and seems to be equally across the engine. Loud noise continues even after 45 min. driving and warm. Engine occasionally missing, and lack of power, only under acceleration which also started at same time as the noise.

About the time all this started, my heater hose borke and I drove about 15 min. with possibly no or little coolant. Temp gage did not go to hot. Oil seems OK, not black and normal viscosity and I had changed it only a few hundred miles earlier. Except for seeming to run on 3.5 cylinders on acceleration, engine seems to perform fine although noisy. I am sure it is not the fuel rail which was mentioned in an earlier posting.

What is going on?
Am I destroying my engine?
How can I fix it?
Do I need to fix it?
