I think you did well - improper passing (usually 4 traffic violation points) was dropped against you. As a matter of fact, if a driver passes a vehicle proceeding in the same direction on the right, the driver is guilty of improper passing, unless the other vehicle is about to make a left turn or there are at least two lanes of traffic proceeding in that direction. I think your case should be discharged, based upon your previous description of the accident. I don't recall you've mentioned that this accident happened in a "no passing" zone.
In NJ Court Rules, a New Jersey attorney can negotiate with the Municipal Court Prosecutor to attempt to reduce points. This may explain why his attorney had a lengthy discussion with prosecutor. You managed to get your case discharged without an attorney is very signicant. More importantly, both the DMV and your car insurance company will not impose surcharges and elegibility points on you.
Contact the insurance company of the other party again. You're entitled to the blue book or repair value, if the repair is more than the value, you get the value. Try to obtain a copy of the 'trial' from the Court.
It's nice to hear from you again. Let us knowwhat happens.
