First, a hit and run may (or should) be covered under your uninsured motorist protection rather than collision coverage. This will eliminate the deductible. Insurance companies hate Uninsured Motorist coverage so you will have to specfically ask for that department and even then you may have a fight.
I deal with insurance adjusters every day and it's not pretty. I usually don't get involved in the vehicle damage aspect of claims but I have one I am trying to resolve right now. The insurance company has used an indepent "appraisal" firm to generate a value based on reported dealer sales and advertisements in our area. It pretends to be objective but it is clearly a sham. The value difference between book and this appraisal in this particular case is not different enough to use my time to argue about. However, the insurance compay cannot just tell you what the value of your car is. What you should do is to get a used car dealer to write you an appraisal of your car and then tell the insurance company you have a expert who has rendered an opinion on market value in your area. Then see what you can negotiate.
Andrew is right about not yelling back at the adjusters on the phone. They are trained to be aggravating, condescending and snippy. Their attitude is no accident. You see it in the varation among particular companies. If you are dealing with a big company like, for example, ALLSTATE, buy the big bottle of Advil. The bottom line is that insurance companies are in the business of collecting premiums and not paying claims. I keep wondering when the public is going to wake up to the realities of the insurance business.
