Straight pipe (center muffler) and inspection?

Just found out that the front flange on the center muffler on my '93 9000aero is rotting out. Before this car I drove an '88 spg with straight exhaust and looved the sound. Rather than shelling out cash for a new muffler, and not yet having the funds for a performance system I thought maybe I'd just replace the center muffler with a straight pipe.
The problem is I haven't inspected the car since registering in Vermont. Anyone have any idea as to whether or not I could pass inspection with just one muffler. How loud can it be, it still has one at least?
Thanks,
Mike
