The axle design has remained unchanged since then your son's Civic. (It might date back to the 1970s.) The CV joint is held onto the axle with an internal c-clip. You have to use a slide hammer on the CV joint to get it off. The whole axle has to come out to clamp it in a vise anyways, so it is easier to take off the tripod bearing on the inner joint side and slide the new boot down over the CV joint rather than pull the CV joint off of the axle stub.
