My mysterious fuel smell turned out to be a cracked fuel pump elbow fitting. That should be easy enough to check. WHen one of them cracks, fuel is sprayed out of the fitting above the gas tank, and the smell should be really noticeable near the left rear wheel. Check inboard and forward of the left rear wheel for drips or strong smell. I didn't notice the major leak back there, because I expected the source of the smell to be in the engine compartment.
Another cause for odors could be the seal that fits against the hood when it is shut, just forward of the windshield wipers and aquarium. That seal is instrumental in keeping engine fumes out of the ventilation system.
Other than that, check the fuel delivery system on the backside of the engine for leaks, drips or sprays. There are seals on both ends of the injectors, one end in the fuel rail, the other in the intake. The fuel pressure regulator and the damper on the rail may be other sources for leaks.
