The original size on the '87 9000 Turbo is 205/55/15, as per the owner's manual and sun visor. I've been told by several major tire vendors that this is an unusual size, although the choices aren't THAT slim for performance tires, I don't think. When you are looking for lesser performing tires, suck as H-rated or slower, or snow tires, your choices in that size do become much less plentiful. Anyhow..
As to the original question about whether handling will improve with a different size, I don't see it. Each variation from stock will offer a greater compromise, in my opinion. 205/50/15 is just too short, my speedometer already reads at least 5%+ high with 205/55/15. 195/60/15 is pretty close to the same diamter, and I've used it. The handling is fine, but ultimate grip will be less, and the slightly taller sidewalls in theory will be less stiff. Of course this naturally assumes you are comparing between the same tire model, which I've never done. I have been using 205/60/15 on my car for several reasons, and it works just fine with a true performance tire (currently Yokohma AVS-i's). But handling is not better than the stock 205/55/15 size.
