Matt, From what I've followed on this board it seems to be normal to hear some hydraulic lifter noise the first minute or so after a cold start.My '90 2.0 litre turbo has done a little of this in the near 10 years I have owned it. The noise should go away though as it warms and should remain fairly absent while engine warm. Other culprits are the upper chain guide,just a block of rubber inside the valve cover,simple and cheap to replace along with the v/cover gasket.It is probably rock hard if still original.
