I was going to post the same question. Looks like it's on a lot of people's minds these days. I just got back from an 800 mile trip, with interesting results. For 65 miles of winding, hilly, two-lane highway, avg. speed 45-55, slight climb of about 2500 feet in 65 miles, AC on, Calif. gas, I was able to end the drive with 33.3 mpg on the EDU. This was driving for mpg, not speed, of course. But then, for the rest of the trip (interstate, 75-80 mph) the mpg declined to 28.2 at the end. This tells me that speed is by far the biggest driver factor in mpg. This is a full 5 mpg difference for going 20 mph faster! BTW, my mileage is terrible around town, like 17. It seems to me the EPA estimate of 29/highway is about right, but the city (I think it was 21) is way optimistic. And there you have it.
