High side A/C gauge fitting trouble - '92 9kT

Hi there,
I have two 9k that have been converted to R134a - '89 9kS and '92 9kT.
I have a set of gauges and they have almost worked fine on the '89. The high side fitting has always been a little bit of a hassle to get on, but it always has gone on. I just figured it was a real tight fit because of the high pressure.
This AM, I tried, for the first time, to get it on the high side fitting on the '92 and it just would not go down far enough to lock on to the valve. I can press it down enough to get a spot reading, but that is pretty cumbersome (and wasteful of refridgerant). It's obvious that others have been able to do it as I can see in the service records from when I bought it that the A/C has been charged a couple times since conversion.
Do I need a new gauge fitting or what?
Thanks in advance...
ETS
