Several things:
1. The compressor has to be off and you have to let the system stabilize for a few minutes before you try to attach the high side. Otherwise there's too much pressure to get the coupler on. Sort of like trying to push your car with the e-brake is on. I usually attached the high side before starting the car and then attached the low side after the ac is running. I also detach the low side before shutting down the ac and don't detach the high side until it's off and the pressure has dropped below 150psi.
2. The coupler may have gummed up with dirt bonding with the refrigerant oil.
3. On the Sanden with both service port fittings on the back, you have to use a right angle adapter for one of the ports or the fittings are too close together to get r134a couplers attached.
