Heater core: if you can smell a sweet odor like fresh bread baking, your sister's car already may have a small heater core leak. You will smell it long before you can see coolant spilling out, perhps this was the cause of the diagnosis.
Mixer Flap: there is a plastic arm on the mixer flap which connects to the stepper motor, and this can break off over time. When this arm breaks, it renders the temperature control ineffective. This may be what is being "reset" on the car. The good news is that there is a cheap repair kit available from SAAB for this.
