people replacing thier R-12 with things like Max Freeze and Freeze 12 and so on. I just did an archive search and it appears that this board overwhelmingly is opposed to use of anything other than a full retrofit to get R-12 systems up and running again.
I have also seen a number of people here that have said to replace your R12 with R 134a, you have to replace everything but the evaporator and condensor on our 9000 AC systems.
I am not trying to incite a riot or anything, but this time of year it comes up a lot. On the BMW board that I visit, many many people have upgraded thier AC to R 134a with simply adding the port adapters and recharging thier systems. On this board everyone talks about evacuating your system, dumping out your oil, changing the receiver/dryer and expansion valve. On the BMW forum I have a lot of friends that made this change 4 summers ago and still are having no problems to date.
I have also seen a lot of posts that say to avoid using anything other than the R-134a upgrade (avoid freeze 12 and other substitutes). What gives here? I know that there is always a lot of skepticism with new products, but now these "environmentally safe" replacements have been on the market for a couple years and everyone that uses them seems to have success. I read some posts here claiming those cans were full of propane or other explosive gasses.
If someone here actually has first hand knowledge of why Freeze 12 or maxifreeze is not a good option for people that still have an R12 system, please post. I really fail to see the logic in spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade a system if you can buy a couple cans of refrigerant and "see what happens". Worst case, if the recharge doesn't work, you can have your system repaired.
Best regards,
David
