The problem with the R12 replacements is that they are blends of other refridgerants. Most are R134a and something like R22 to circulate the old oil. R12 uses mineral oil, it is circulated through the system with the R12. R134a uses different oil, which isn't compatible. If you charge an R12 car with R134a, the freon won't circulate the oil, and the compressor will fail. Thats why 134a conversion kits have ester oil. It is compatible with both gases, and will circulate with the 134a.

The blends, like Freeze 12, use R22 or some other refigerant, to carry the mineral oil, so you don't have to add anything else. On paper it works fine, but what can happen in a car is as follows:

The different gasses will leak out of the system at different rates. The R22 or other refigerant (which is used to carry the oil), may leak out faster, and then you have a situation where you are circulating R134a without any oil. Thats bad.

Some of the other R12 replacements are flamable. You want to avoid them.

Just convert it to 134a. I've converted 15 or so cars. They all work. You can tell the A/C isn't as cold as the R12 was, but its adaquate.

Better yet, go get your 609 license, and buy R12 for the cars that still use it. Thats what I did. Check out epatest.com. Take the test online for $25.

With the license, I buy my R12 at either Pep Boys or on ebay.
