really kill the crud. Still not ideal.
Try to vacuum out the area where the filter goes, but be careful not to damage the evaporator vanes.

There are sprays for cleaning up auto duct systems, but haven't heard a lot of positive results. Probably really need to physically clean all the ducts to get it all out. And even then....
Some pet odor spray might work, as they are meant for household interior use.
