they can take a lot of abuse and still be fine.
I ran dino oil (Castrol GTX) in all my cars for years. Changed at "about" 5K miles and never had an oil related issue. The key is changing it more than what oil you use, IMHO, assuming you are running a quality oil (as opposed to unknown, store-brands).
Given the heat oil is subjected to in a turbo engine, a synthetic is probably better long term, but as long as you change it regularly a good dino oil is likely to be fine. Most oil engineers will tell you that 5K miles is a good interval unless you are always in stop and go city driving.
With Mobil 1, I now do mine at about 7000 - 8000 miles (2 9K turbos and a Ford Exploder) which works out to 2X/year, so I save the time of a couple of changes.
Filters are important. I use a Mann on the Saabs and Pure 1 on the Exploder. Mann is the equivalent of the OEM Saab filter. Some here say not to use Frams, but I took one apart after 5000 miles and aside from being filthy, it wasn't falling apart like some folks claim Frams do. It was an upper grade filter, not the base Fram, though.
