Hello,
Friday I finished up the AT replacement on my 91 9kt by placing the wheel liner and hood back on. It took 4-5 months working every couple of weeks about 2-4hrs at a time. Somewhere between 20-40hrs to complete. I bought a used AT because I didn't want to fork over the cost for a rebuild. I know I'm gambling quite a bit but when you only have so much $$ that is the route I had to go.
I will have to say that doing this yourself is not that hard for a competent DIY. The AT manual was helpful. The hardest part was getting the torque converter bolts back in. My hands were simply too large to work the bolts. My dad helped and he was able to get the bolts in with his small hands. The only problem I encountered was not matching up the torque convertor bolts with the flywheel correctly the first try. The transmission would not fit tight up against the engine because of this.
Working in my dad's new 4 stall garage we used a drive under engine puller to hold the engine up with chainfall and then a cherry picker with chain around AT to raise/lower the tranny in the car. 4 jack stands were also used to hold the car up.
I did the headgasket and TC on this car about 60k ago and I would say doing the auto tranny was easier. Didn't seem to be as many small bits and pieces to worry about. The confidence knowing that I could do the job, if careful, was also there since the car is still running after my HG/TC replacement. If anyone has any specific questions I would be glad to answer them. There is not a whole lot of info in the archives on AT removal.
