Because you will be stranded. Ask me how I know.
On my 94cs wrecked last December, it took me two broken intermediate shaft to learn that the carrier bearing is different between automatic and 5 speed years ago. Until I found out on this bulletin board.
The first broken intermediate shaft left me stranded 500 miles from home in Columbus, Ohio. The car is flat bed all the way back to New Jersey. That's about 1,000 miles after engine replacement. The replacement engine, BTW, had a automatic transmission, hence a carrier bearing for an automatic transmission. I just didn't bother to replace the carrier bearing because I didn't know there is a difference. The second broken shaft, also about 1,000 miles later, occurred right in front of my house. That's when I started asking questions and learned.
The good thing is you can replace the carrier bearing in-car. Do it now.
