My first Saab that I bought couple years ago (87 9K ) was sitting dead for 3+years-it needed a flexplate. Anyway, when I first started it-it was loud like old dying diesel engine. I was afraid valves gonna crash. I let it run couple times for 5-10 minutes with 20 minutes brake in between. No change.
It was n/a engine, so I used Gunk engine flush. Same. But next day I started- it was whispering! Maybe give it some time with sort term idling-see what happens.
You told me you were going to use a timing light to set an ignition. Did you?
If not, loose that bolt on distributor and try to "play" changing cap position to see if idle changes(improves). I'm sure you followed ignition order, but double check. Check if throttle body is closed at idle.
One more thing- I had Isuzu Amigo one time and it started idling very bad, no pick up on 1-2 gears, backfiring. Turned out to be distributor cap-looked very good to me though. And it's after I put new plugs, wires, filter. $3 fixed a problem. Look into it.
I'm glad your almost back on the road!
Take care!
Victor
