How's your clutch? I had a worn out clutch, trouble getting into reverse, and gear whine on my 88T with 161k. Last month, I replaced the clutch, and all transmission bearings except needle bearings. I hadn't done much transmission work before so it was pretty challenging but the results so far are good. While I was in there I checked very carefully for damage, and although there was wear on the gears, bearings, etc. which accounted for the whine, I didn't find anything really serious with reverse except that the idler gear was chewed up a bit where it first engages. Unless taking things apart and reassembling them fixed something I didn't notice, I think the problem had more to do with the input shaft not spinning down and replacing the clutch assembly helped the most.
This is a different story from my son's 95ng900, though. He slowly lost reverse and then drove without for quite a while. He found a used transmission for $900 but we didn't get around to putting it in until the 30day warranty had expired. Input shaft was scored and leaks oil, but it's fine other than that. His first transmission sits in the garage with several teeth missing from the reverse gear.
Hope this helps.
