Everybody---Thank you so much for the replies, you are all very conscientious and have very interesting insight that is conducive to my situation. I still need to talk to my local mechanic who is likely to give us a great price on the car because my mom has gone there and only there to service her German cars over the past 16 years--very honest people.

My criteria for the car are as follows:

ALL service records
Frequent oil changes
No TCS
Recent replacement of these parts, or most of them: (needless to say there are some parts more important than others)

Heater core
Motor Mounts
DI Cassette
Air Conditioning
Blower motor
Clutch
Crankshaft pulley
Head gasket

The lesser details:
Type of spark plugs
Type of transmission fluid
Refill the cooling system/flush annually
How often the CV joints were replaced
Replacement the thermostat (Genuine Saab)
Replacement the accessory drive (serpentine) belt
Replacement the tensioner and idler pulleys

Now obviously, I will probably never find a car that meets these standards--but I will try to come close. When (if) I find this dream vehicle, I will have 2 mechanics of independent establishments complete a thorough inspection of the car. Then, after all of that, I might (depending on how much money I make between now and then) take out a third party insurance policy on the vehicle. This, in my opinion, will (almost) make certain my car will last at least through high school, and maybe (but probably not) college, without any major complications.

Again, thank you, and if anybody else feels the need to drop a pair of pennies into my (now wealthy) piggy bank of much appreciated advice, you are certainly welcome.
