I called Erikson a week ago trying to figure out what's in my tranny that was rebuild in 99. Simple answer-they ship them dry as did company named CRS who used to rebuild them. So what did dealer or indy put in there is the question that's hard to answer. Mine has a little leak from drain plug and I have no idea what's in there. Flush and refill is the only way to go.
This is what Saab says about synthetic in BB, which leaves some models for regular oil use only:
A new gearbox oil Saab MTF 0063, which improves shifting quality, has been introduced into production from January 1, 2002.
This Oil can be used in older models up to and including M94 (Cabriolet from M95) in order to improve shifting capability under the condition that the description under heading "Procedure" is followed.
This condition is to flush it 3 times before use.
To confuse even more this is what Saab said month before that:
A new oil has been introduced into production from January 11, 2002 (see TN 02-02-417). The following describes oil types to be used for each corresponding gearbox during replacement.
New Gearboxes
For gearboxes up to and including no. V35478, use gearbox oil (40) 400 108 247
^ From gearbox no. V35479, use gearbox oil MTF0063 (40) 400 132 213
Replacement Gearboxes
- For unmarked gearboxes, use gearbox oil (40) 400 108 247
- For gearboxes marked with label "MTF0063", use gearbox oil MTF0063 (40) 400 132 213
