Here's a quote from the 900 board:
"75w-90 gear oil(GL-4) has approximately the same viscosity as 10w 30 motor oil. It is a misconception that the trans oil numbers mean a heavier lubricant. The regular 75w-90 GL-4 gear oil has additives to resist shearing in ring and pinion gears, but it is rumored to be hard on the synchos, so I have always avoided it."
I indeed operated under that misconception myself, so apparently some gear oils would be similar in weight to motor oils.
According to the posts there, factory spec was indeed 10W30 motor oil. There, the debate rages as to whether Redline MTL and similar products are a help to those tender old beasts.
