there have been numerous posts to compare these two, and I posted a couple of times here and over at the 9-5 board (you may have to look way back however).
I also saw the alternatives you posted, Audi and BMW. The two alternates are smaller (interior room) than a 9-5. Do you need or want the bigger 9-5 ? That would be the first question. The next question is do you need a hatch ?
The 9-5 Aero is a different car than the 9K Aero. The 9-5 is a better cruiser than the 9K, especially on the highway or over rough roads. The 9K Aero suspension is rough, more torque steer, heavier steering..... I still think Saab cheap out on the interior of the 9-5, material quality is not as nice as the later 9000.
I don't know whether you are looking at the auto or manual for the 9-5. Either way, the 9-5 Aero is more civilized than the 9K Aero. If you like the wild mustang ride of the 9K then you won't like the 9-5. What you get from the 9-5 Aero is a good handling car with a smoother delivery of torque and HP, especially with the auto box.
Initially, I liked the 9K Aero seats better; but over time I think the 9-5 Aero seats (2002 and later) are just as good. The seats in the 9K Aero are bigger and wider, probably great for anyone who is a bit hefty in size. The 9-5 Aero seats are more like gloves, they are smaller and body forming but to me they actually are more comfortable.
No stock 9K can match the Xenon lights in the new 9-5s, that would be a considerable as well.
I think you need to have a test drive and compare.
