I have a similar problem on my 93 9000 CSE Turbo, 120k miles -- when holding the key in the start position, sometimes I would get ONE click on the solenoid (not a series of clicks), the dash lights did NOT go dim and the starter did NOT turn. The problem began about four months ago and has been getting slightly worse over time.
But since it was intermittent (about 2/3 of the time the car would start fine), I thought I might have the "worn starter brushes" discussed extensively in other posting, so I finally bought a rebuilt starter. So I just installed it, and the damn engine still won't turn over! One click, same as previous.
So then I disconnected and cleaned up all the battery to engine and engine to body cables (which it looks like the previous owner had replaced already). Still no difference.
Battery is OK -- not great, but two consecutive 10-second tests with a 100-amp load tester showed it still in the high 11-volt range. However, I have run down the battery a million times over the past 1 1/2 years, since I traveled a lot.
If I think the problem is the ignition lock or wiring, and I want to test the starter with a switchable bypass circuit, do I give the small terminal on the starter a hot feed, or simply ground it?
Thanks for all suggestions?
